Unitarian Jihad

The following quote, is an excerpt from this article.

Greetings to the Imprisoned Citizens of the United States! Too long has your attention been waylaid by the bright baubles of extremist thought. Too long have fundamentalist yahoos of all religions (except Buddhism — 14-5 vote, no abstentions, fundamentalism subcommittee) made your head hurt. Too long have you been buffeted by angry people who think that God talks to them. You have a right to your moderation! You have the power to be calm! We will use the IED of truth to explode the SUV of dogmatic expression!

Beware! Unless you people shut up and begin acting like grown-ups with brains enough to understand the difference between political belief and personal faith, the Unitarian Jihad will begin a series of terrorist-like actions. We will take over television studios, kidnap so-called commentators and broadcast calm, well-reasoned discussions of the issues of the day. We will not try for “balance” by hiring fruitcakes; we will try for balance by hiring non-ideologues who have carefully thought through the issues.

We are Unitarian Jihad, and our motto is: “Sincerity is not enough.” We have heard from enough sincere people to last a lifetime already. Just because you believe it’s true doesn’t make it true. Just because your motives are pure doesn’t mean you are not doing harm. Get a dog, or comfort someone in a nursing home, or just feed the birds in the park. Play basketball. Lighten up. The world is not out to get you, except in the sense that the world is out to get everyone.

Get your Unitarian Jihad name at Brother Neutron Bomb of Uncanny Honesty’s blog. You can choose between gender specific titles or exact your will as an object.

Today, I am . . . The Battle Axe of Serenity. Other days, I am these personalities: The Honourable Straight Razor of Rationality and/or The Saber of Utter Judgment.

What is your Unitarian Jihad name?

Nice. I agree. Religious extremists are pushing their way further into American politics. Gross.

I believe that atheists are making great efforts to change the world. Anti-smoking movements, clean environment, anti-drug movements, STD awareness, and annihilation of religious persecution (gay rights, etc.).

    Nice.

Some of the titles are hilarious in their absurdity. Someone on wordpress got ‘The Pepper Spray of Compassion’ which promptly succeeded in generating within me a visual of what being pepper sprayed with compassion may look like.

    On Atheism:
Wanting a clean environment, is not necessarily related to Atheism. I live in a fairly religious country that is also particularly environmentally conscientious. With numerous national parks, lakes, wildlife conservation, outdoor activities as part of the lifestyle, consideration for the personal space of others, and constant bombardment of government sponsored television advertisements about being ‘green’ . . . concern for the environment is heavily ingrained in the culture.

The two issues from your list that may be generally equated with Atheism, are STD awareness and anti-discrimination support on sexuality matters simply because in the absence of Religion, they are no longer synonymous for sin and deviancy.

Anti-smoking movements are usually related to issues with the environment and personal space. When a country’s people value both, anti-smoking laws spring forth like weeds. In most parts of this country, it is illegal to smoke in indoor public spaces. In some cities, the anti-smoking laws extend to restaurants, bars, casinos, bingo halls, patios, transit platforms and building entranceways.

I have not, as of yet, detected an Atheism consensus on anti-drug issues. I for instance support the legalization of street drugs—specifically marijuana because it is far safer than alcohol and can have great medicinal purposes. However, I only stand by legalization of street drugs if it is accompanied with heavy government quality regulations (minimizing the purchase of tainted drugs) and educational programs that teach about the effects of particular drugs and their recommended doses.

    Nessa,

I am extremely selective with my blogroll. Including a blog is the same as giving it my personal endorsement. But, it is not just that. I consider it simple courtesy to be active on the blogs I choose. As you know, I do not offer my time and dedication easily. It is also not desirable to me to befriend numerous individuals at one time, and continuous participation in any outside blog naturally opens up that possibility. Therefore, the inclusion of a blog to my blogroll is an unspoken invitation/acceptance of friendship–a fact that is usually unknown to the author of the blog. It is safe to say then, that if I have commented on any blog and yet have not added it to my blogroll yet, it is because the author has failed to impress me in a meaningful way, and until they do, only my indifference faces them.

    “Sincerity is not enough!”.

That is one of my favourite lines from the excerpt.

“The Pointy Stick of Reasoned Debate”

I believe that is the default name. Try clicking on the link below it titled: “Appeal to Name Assignment Committee Again” and see what you get.

    I appealed!

    I am:

The Meat Grinder of Majestic Patience

Except that I’m not. Patience is definitely not my thing.

    I am appealing again…
